Soulmates

I believe in soulmates, but not in the ones you find, not the ones you stumble upon, not the ones fairytale say will come. I believe in soulmates, the ones made through time by two people who choose love one another, in every way, every day. I believe in soulmates, the ones that are worked for. Not the ones that are easy to come by, but the kind that choose to stay together. I believe in soulmates, the ones that are made through conscious awareness that results in a love that is endless.

I typically don’t write love poems because love is still a mystery to me. When it comes to soulmates, I don’t even know where to begin. From Disney movies to romance novels, everyone makes the notion of soulmates seem absolutely magical. But what do you do when your everyday life seems to lack magic? Do you give up on love and choose to remain alone?

I decided to come up with my own definition of soulmates based on my own experience, from trial and error, broken hearts, and shattered dreams. Now that I’ve grown up, I know that there is no knight in shining armor that is coming to rescue me, no one that will instantly be a perfect fit. There are, however, many out there who are willing to give love a chance with me.

Finding a soulmate is about finding someone who is willing to work through the ups and downs to be with me, someone who I’m willing to work for, someone who will be my partner through this mess we call life, someone whose partner I can be. Nothing in life seems to come easily, especially not love. I wish books and movies depicted this more clearly when I was growing up so that I could have proper expectations.

Soulmates are forged together under heat and pressure. Their relationship is tested over and over again, and it gets a little stronger each time that it is about to break. They are made through conscious choices every day; they are made by choosing one another over and over again. At least, that’s what I’ve learned from my years of failed and successful relationships. Good luck with finding someone that is worthy of becoming your soulmate – they are out there, trust me.
